ABOUT ADVANCED DRIVING

Advanced driving combines a positive attitude with excellent observation and hazard recognition, allowing smooth control of the car and the correct choice of position and speed for maximum safe progress.

By adopting the 'System of Car Control', you will be able to approach and negotiate hazards in a controlled and systematic way, ensuring you leave nothing to chance.

Hazards are defined as anything encountered when driving which may contain an element of danger such as junctions, bends, other road users or even variations in road surface or weather conditions.

Who is an Advanced Driver?

He or she is a driver who is enthusiastic about driving, and who is concerned about their overall standard of driving. They drive safely and with courtesy and precision, they are confident and decisive, but never reckless and anticipate danger and mistakes by others. They will take up the correct position on the approach to bends, crossroads, roundabouts and other hazards and make better progress than most other drivers.

In summary a driver who would set an example to others.

Why be an Advanced Driver

Once you have achieved your goal of passing the advanced test you could benefit from:
  • Being a more skilled, confident, competent and safer driver
  • Less wear an tear on your vehicle, resulting in cheaper running costs
  • Driving once again becomes more of a pleasure
  • Cheaper motor insurance
  • The recognition of being part of a respected road safety organisation
  • The pride in having passed the Advanced Driving Test
  • IAM membership benefits
  • And, of course, you are more likely to live to drive another day!

Perhaps the main motivation for taking the test is the sense of pride and achievement in having demonstrated that you are capable of driving to a far higher standard than that of the basic L-Test.

Most importantly, statistics clearly show that those who have passed their Advanced Driving Test, or even trained for it and failed are ultimately safer drivers.
